A short while ago, I registered my Verizon phone for their new vzwpixplace.com service. Immediately I was in floored at this revolution in the way we communicate. In the next few years, I foresee all mobile services copycatting this ingenious communication medium since the video and audio technology is already available on most cell phones.
The service is extremely easy to use: You simply select a phone number from your address book and record a short video by holding your cell phone at arms distance and talking while it takes video. Once complete, you send the message in the same way that you would a text message. The recipient receives this message and can reply directly to it with their own pixplace message.
Talk about fun times! I've convinced all of my friends and family to sign up for www.vzwpixplace.com so that we can all communicate this way. My grandparents love it since they can see my smiling face instead of me just being a muffled voice over their phone. This has been great for them since I've moved a few hours away and don't see them as much as I used to. For my teenage brother & sister, I've finally got them to stop sending me text messages all day long. They text with their friends all the time but since I'm not in school anymore, texting has really lost it's appeal. Vzwpixplace has been great because now we can carry on three way conversations like we're still living in the same house, even though we're miles apart. If something important (or incriminating ;]) is said, vzwpixplace messages can be sent to our mom so the conversation is now a family affair. Mom loves seeing her kids bonding and has grown to love the service herself, though her friends are still not subscribers so they can only view the messages and can't respond.
The only drawback to Verizon's pix place service is the amount of memory each phone has. Currently, I can store about 75 videos (with audio) on my phone. A typical conversation with us is around 4-5 videos sent to and from each other. This sounds like there would be plenty of room but the truth is, I've got some pretty priceless clips that I simply can't get rid of. I'll be upgrading my phone soon enough so I can keep more of them but am holding off as we all know that cell phone technology is growing in leaps and bounds. Next year there will probably be phones with memory 10x as large as what I currently have.
If you've not tried video texting yet, I strongly suggest you do so as it's lots of fun.
